Photography is an unusual art form, practiced by many as a documentation of their life or as a hobby. Many snapshots are keepsakes but to create an image that moves others is difficult. Fine art photography involves craft, technique and an eye for the composition. Many people perceive the final product as less artistic since there was a mechanism involved in the production. For many decades, photographers clamored for their work to be considered an art, not a craft. Now that digital photography has made ‘getting it right’ so much easier, the world is inundated by images, and the number of outstanding pictures has dramatically increased.

Yet, when we judge images, we rely on our subjective gaze. I believe that a good image involves the viewer. The image may be technically perfect and yet fail to contain a message beyond the beautiful sunset. Great images inspire to go on a voyage of the mind. It takes time. A quick glance is not sufficient. We ask ourselves: What could this mean? What is this object, this line, this form? What is the effect on me? And this process is separate from what the maker intended. The photograph has embarked on a journey of its own.

This additional layer of complication and beauty is what I strive to attain.

I like to study photobooks, and I feel drawn to a number of master photographers, such as the ‘Poet of Prague’, Josef Sudek. He once said:

In the age of easily achievable perfect exposure, I like to examine what made images stand out, realizing that this is a subjective view, based on what appeals to me.

‘There will always be those who look only at technique and ask ‘how’, while others of a more curious nature ask ‘why’. Personally, I have always preferred inspiration to information.’

I like this statement since it conveys the courage to follow your heart and take pictures without focusing on the more technical side of photography. Yes, it is enjoyable to study the craft and feel the confidence building. But that alone would not make photography appealing to me.
